The Scent of Travel
Discover the beauty of Hungary's lavender fields, from Tihany to Pannonhalma. Experience the scents, colours and peaceful moments of a Hungarian summer.
Travel brings us experiences that remind us we have stepped away from our everyday routines and left the comfort of home behind.
Every journey has its own distinctive scent: the salty sea breeze, the resinous aroma of a forest, or, in the heart of a Hungarian summer, the unmistakable fragrance of blooming lavender.
Slow down. There is no need to rush—take the time to enjoy the experience. Stop for a while, look around, and wander through fields covered in fragrant purple blossoms. At many lavender farms, visitors can pick a small bouquet to take home, preserving the memories of summer long after the season has ended.
Many lavender fields also offer concerts, festivals, or even cocktail evenings, adding music and local hospitality to the beauty and fragrance of the landscape.
Hungary’s best-known lavender fields are located in Tihany, on the Balaton Uplands, one of the country’s most picturesque regions. The area is managed by the Balaton Uplands National Park and the Tihany Abbey, which have helped preserve this unique landscape for generations.
In the Abbey’s gift shop, visitors can purchase lavender syrup, handmade soaps, and a wide variety of lavender products—perfect souvenirs to bring home. And no visit would be complete without tasting the famous lavender ice cream served in nearby cafés.
Fortunately, Tihany is not the only place where you can enjoy this experience. Beautiful lavender fields can also be found in Dörgicse, Pannonhalma, and several locations throughout Zala County.
Travelling across Hungary offers countless opportunities to discover places where nature, local traditions, and warm hospitality come together to create unforgettable memories.
Perhaps that is the true meaning of travel—not simply visiting new places, but collecting small, lasting moments that stay with us for years.
When winter arrives and we take out the dried lavender bouquet we picked ourselves, the scent instantly brings back the warmth of summer, the feeling of freedom, and the comforting embrace of nature. The journey may come to an end, but its memories remain with us forever.
