Dobogókő – A Mountain Escape Near Budapest

There are numerous hiking destinations around Budapest that are easy to reach. Dobogókő is one of them, and it has been a popular destination for day trips from the capital for decades.

The 1977 edition of the Hungary guidebook does not devote much space to Dobogókő. It gives its elevation as around 700 metres and mentions several hiking destinations that remain popular today, including Prédikálószék, where a lookout tower has since been built.

It is also interesting to look at how people could reach Dobogókő in 1977. According to statistics from the period, there were only 19 passenger cars per 100 households. By comparison, in 2024 there were more than 105 passenger cars per 100 households, based on the number of registered cars and households. The difference illustrates just how much the role of the car has changed over the past nearly fifty years.

For those travelling without a car in 1977, the bus was one of the options for reaching Dobogókő. Contemporary transport publications show that a bus connection ran in the direction of Budapest–Pomáz–Pilisszentkereszt–Dobogókő, providing access to this popular mountain destination.

Today, of course, the situation is quite different. Several hiking routes of varying lengths and difficulty start from the central car park at Dobogókő. Interestingly, some of the routes have their roots in trails that were already accessible in 1977.

One example is today’s Thirring Trail, which leads through the rocky woodland around Dobogókő. The Thirring Trail and the Rezső Trail are among the easier walks, while the Zsivány Trail is longer and requires somewhat more attention.

The different circular trails can also be combined. This makes it possible to create a longer hike of around 12 kilometres, suitable for a longer morning or afternoon excursion in good weather.

Those looking for a more demanding experience can head towards the Zsivány Rocks or the Rám Gorge. These are no longer simply forest walks. This is particularly true if the Rám Gorge is incorporated into a longer circular hike via Prédikálószék. At around 16 kilometres, with approximately 800 metres of elevation gain, this is a genuine mountain hike.

Some sections are rocky, steep and slippery in wet weather. Proper footwear and some hiking experience are therefore advisable. Anyone choosing this route should be prepared to spend most of the day on the trail.

If you would like to stay in the area for several days, there are several accommodation options around Dobogókő. The Baron Eötvös Loránd Mountain Lodge is complemented by guesthouses and other accommodation.

The Hygge Floating House accommodation offers a very different experience. Its premium wooden cabins combine close contact with nature and a more exclusive setting, making them an interesting option for those who want not only to hike but also to spend a few quiet days away from everyday life.

Dobogókő is a good destination for a few hours of relaxation throughout the year. The shorter trails are generally accessible in suitable weather, while the longer routes require preparation according to the season and weather conditions.

Those who would like to combine hiking with a cultural programme can also visit nearby Esztergom. With its historical traditions, architecture and artistic heritage, the city is worth visiting in its own right.

Dobogókő still offers much the same thing today as it did almost fifty years ago: nature, forests and hiking opportunities within easy reach of Budapest. What has changed most is the way we get there.
