The Gyula Castle Theater has been operating every summer since 1964 in the only remaining intact lowland Gothic brick castle in Central Europe.
The 2024 summer season of the Gyula Castle Theater once again awaits theater enthusiasts with a rich and diverse program offering. The performances, brought to life within the walls of the historic castle, range from classics to contemporary works, from comedies to dramas, ensuring that everyone can find a piece that interests and entertains them.
A highlight of the season is the Béla Halmos Folk and World Music Festival, taking place on July 12th. The festival features the most outstanding Hungarian and international performers of folk and world music, providing an unforgettable musical experience for the audience.
The theatrical performances include numerous classic works such as Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida, Molière’s The Miser, Goldoni’s Mirandolina, and Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. These timeless pieces gain new meaning in the historical atmosphere of the Gyula Castle Theater, offering an unforgettable experience for the audience.
Contemporary Hungarian drama is also represented in the season. Three plays by István Örkény, Catsplay, The Tót Family, and The Key Seekers, will be staged, holding a distorted mirror to society with their portrayal of Hungarian reality interwoven with absurd humor.

Jenő Rejtő’s The Blonde Cyclone, or a Gentleman’s Life is Not a Thoroughfare, Dan Goggin’s Nunsense, Marc Camoletti’s Boeing Boeing, and Ferenc Molnár’s Ibolya and One, Two, Three are guaranteed to bring a smile to the audience’s faces.
