Nestled amidst the picturesque Bakony Hills, the Zirc Cistercian Abbey stands as one of Hungary’s most significant historical and cultural landmarks. The history of Zirc Abbey began in 1182 when King Béla III granted the land to the Cistercian Order. The monks, who arrived from Clairvaux, soon began constructing the monastery, which became one of the most important religious centers in the country during the Middle Ages. Although the Mongol invasion caused severe damage to the complex, it was successfully rebuilt by the 14th century, marking the beginning of the abbey’s golden age.
In the 16th century, during the Ottoman occupation, the abbey suffered severe damage once again. The monks fled, and the buildings were destroyed or damaged. However, the abbey was revived in the 18th century when the Cistercian Order returned and initiated extensive construction projects. The Baroque-style abbey church and the surrounding complex, which can still be seen today, acquired their present form during this period.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the abbey became an important intellectual center of the Hungarian Enlightenment and Reform Era. The monks of Zirc played a significant role in the development of education and science. The country’s first grammar school operated here, and the abbey’s library housed invaluable manuscripts and books.
The storms of the 20th century did not spare Zirc Abbey either. During the First and Second World Wars, and later under the communist regime, the abbey suffered significant damage. The monks were expelled, and the buildings were nationalized. However, reconstruction began after the fall of communism. The Cistercians returned, and the abbey once again became a vital center of the Catholic Church in Hungary.
Zirc Abbey offers numerous attractions for visitors. The Baroque-style abbey church captivates visitors with its impressive size and rich ornamentation. Next to the church is the monastery, where visitors can stroll through its rooms and corridors, feeling transported back in time. The abbey’s library houses over 60,000 volumes, including numerous rare books and valuable manuscripts. Adjacent to the library is the museum, which showcases the history of the abbey and the life of the Cistercian Order.
The arboretum belonging to the abbey offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers. The area, spanning over 80 hectares, is home to thousands of plant species, including many rare and unique specimens. Walking along the arboretum’s educational trails, visitors can explore the native and exotic flora and enjoy the tranquility of nature.
