An essential figure in Hungarian sparkling wine culture, the story of the Törley Sparkling Wine Cellar is a success story spanning over 140 years, intertwined with the history of Hungary, its gastronomic traditions, and the joy of celebration.
The story begins in 1882 when József Törley, utilizing his experience gained in Reims, France, founded his sparkling wine cellar in Budafok. In the initial period, French experts assisted in production, and the first sparkling wines still bore French stylistic features. However, József Törley was not satisfied with this; he continuously developed the production technology, and soon Törley sparkling wines acquired a unique character.
By the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, Törley sparkling wine became one of the most beloved drinks in the Monarchy. The cellar continuously expanded, and the Törley name became synonymous with quality and celebration. During the millennial celebrations, Törley sparkling wine was already the official supplier of the Imperial and Royal Court, and it was known and recognized in many parts of the world.
The First World War and the collapse of the Monarchy also dealt a severe blow to the Törley Sparkling Wine Cellar. Production declined, and in the difficult economic situation, the cellar had to fight for its survival. During the interwar period, Törley flourished again, but the Second World War brought new challenges. After the war, the cellar was nationalized, and the Törley name disappeared from sparkling wine bottles for a time.
In the 1950s, the Törley Sparkling Wine Cellar restarted production, and although quality and selection were limited during the decades of socialism, the Törley name remained a symbol of Hungarian sparkling wine culture. After the change of regime, the privatization of the cellar opened a new chapter in Törley’s history. The company modernized production, introduced new sparkling wines, and once again became a dominant player in the domestic market.
The Törley Sparkling Wine Cellar remains the flagship of Hungarian sparkling wine culture. The company offers a wide selection of sparkling wines, from dry, elegant varieties to light, fruity flavors. Törley sparkling wines have won numerous domestic and international awards and are available in many countries worldwide.
