Spring in Hungary

Spring in Hungary is not just the time when nature awakens, but also the beginning of a magical kaleidoscope of colors. Soon, the verdant landscapes are flooded with the fragrance and sight of blossoming fruit trees. It is particularly enchanting when the countless tiny flowers of plum and cherry trees dress the countryside in white and pink. If you wish to be part of this spring miracle, Hungary awaits you with numerous excursion destinations where you can admire the blossoming orchards up close.
Let’s begin our journey perhaps with the most well-known location, Nagykörű, situated about 30 kilometers from Szolnok. The settlement is rightly called the “capital of cherries,” as over 100 varieties of cherry trees can be found in the 200-hectare area stretching from the church garden. When the trees burst into bloom at the end of April and the beginning of May, the village transforms into a fairytale landscape. Walking under the white and pink clouds of blossoms, you can feel the sweet scent of spring and marvel at the diligent work of the bees. Nagykörű is not just about the view: during the blooming season, numerous programs, cherry fairs, and tastings are also organized, so lovers of flavors will also find something to their liking. It is also worth visiting the local producers, who await visitors with fresh cherries and other delicacies.
The landscapes of the Balaton Uplands are stunning in themselves, but they become even more magical in spring, during the blossoming of the orchards. Vast plum and cherry fields stretch across the slopes of Badacsony, the hills of the Káli Basin, and the surroundings of Szent György Hill. The contrast of the white and pink blossoms with the blue Lake Balaton and the verdant vineyards provides an unforgettable sight. Numerous hiking trails in the Balaton Uplands lead through the blossoming orchards, so you can discover the beauty of the landscape either on foot or by bicycle. It is worth stopping in the charming villages, where you can taste local wines and relax in the flower-scented gardens. Besides the lavender fields of Tihany, the blossoming orchards also offer a unique spring experience.
Near Budapest, on the slopes of the Gödöllő Hills, you can also find a good number of blossoming plum and cherry trees. The small villages nestled among the hills and the winding roads are ideal for a peaceful spring excursion. The park of the Royal Palace of Gödöllő is worth a visit in itself, but the blooming of the surrounding orchards further enhances the beauty of the landscape. During a walk or bike tour in the hills, you can enjoy the silence, the fresh air, and the fragrance of the flowers. It is also worth visiting the local farmers’ markets, where fresh spring fruits and vegetables await you.
In the northeastern corner of Hungary, in Szatmár-Bereg, plums have a special significance. The trees that provide the raw material for the famous Szatmár plum pálinka burst into snow-white bloom in spring, offering a picturesque sight to the landscape. The Szatmár-Beregi Pálinka Knights’ Order organizes the Plum Blossom Festival every year, during which the knights solemnly greet spring and the blossoming trees. During an excursion in the region, it is worth visiting the traditional villages, learning about the local folk customs, and of course, tasting the famous plum pálinka (in moderation!). The landscape along the Tisza River, together with the blossoming orchards, provides a unique experience for lovers of nature and traditions.
If you don’t have the opportunity to travel far from the capital, you can also find some places in Budapest where you can admire the blossoming plum and cherry trees. You can find beautiful specimens in the Buda Arboretum, the ELTE Botanical Garden, and the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden. The Tóth Árpád Promenade in Buda Castle also offers a wonderful sight during the blooming season. These green oases in the heart of the city offer an opportunity for a short spring getaway and to admire the beauty of the flowers.
Timing: The blooming of plum and cherry trees usually lasts from mid-April to early May, but the weather can greatly influence the timing. It is worth checking the current blooming situation before you set off.
