Small mountain lakes: wonder and spectacle

“Tengerszem” is a small, usually freshwater lake formed in the mountains. They are typically created when glaciers retreat. The water collects in the cirques and behind the terminal moraines; these negative landforms become the lake beds of the “tengerszems.”
Many geographical names were not created on a scientific basis. The name “tengerszem” is one of them. “Tengerszems” are usually formed as a result of volcanic activity, mining, or human activity.
These small mountain lakes can be permanent or temporary. Permanent lakes always have water, while temporary lakes only have water when it rains or snow melts.
These small mountain lakes play an important role in the environment. They provide habitat for aquatic creatures and help keep the water clean. They are also tourist attractions; many people visit them for hiking purposes.
