Nestled in the heart of the Balaton Uplands, in the picturesque Káli Basin, Salföld is a village that instantly captivates visitors with its historical monuments, natural beauty, and unique atmosphere. The village’s history dates back to the time of the Hungarian conquest, and it was considered a flourishing settlement in the Middle Ages. However, during the Turkish occupation, Salföld was also destroyed and only began to be repopulated in the 18th century.
Historical Monuments
The most significant historical monument of Salföld is the ruins of the Pauline Monastery located southeast of the village. Built in the 14th century, the monastery was destroyed during the Turkish times, but the remaining walls and the ruins of the church still offer an impressive sight. Walking among the ruins, the life of the medieval monks almost comes alive, and we can imagine what everyday life in the monastery might have been like.
The Saint Matthew Church, located in the center of the village, was also built in the Middle Ages, and although it also suffered severe damage during the Turkish times, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The church’s unique frescoes and the carved altar are valuable relics of Baroque art.
