Lillafüred, a settlement located at the eastern foot of the Bükk Mountains, is one of Hungary’s most popular tourist destinations. The picturesque surroundings, rich historical heritage, and numerous attractions offer a unique experience to visitors.
Embraced by Nature
Lillafüred is a paradise for nature lovers. The settlement is situated on the shore of Lake Hámori, which is fed by the Szinva stream. The lake and its surroundings offer numerous opportunities for relaxation: boating, fishing, walking on the lakeside promenade, or even having a picnic on the grass. Many hiking trails in the Bükk Mountains start from Lillafüred, so mountain enthusiasts will also find plenty to do. Nearby are the Anna Cave and the Szent István Cave, which dazzle visitors with their impressive stalactite formations.
Historical Monuments
Lillafüred boasts not only natural beauty but also a rich historical heritage. The settlement began to develop at the end of the 19th century when iron ore mining started in the area. Parallel to the boom in mining, a resort was also established, which soon became a popular meeting place for the Hungarian aristocracy and the art world. The settlement’s heyday was between the two world wars when numerous imposing villas and hotels were built.
The Palace Hotel: The Jewel of Lillafüred
The Palace Hotel in Lillafüred is the most iconic building in the settlement. The Neo-Renaissance-style hotel was built between 1927 and 1930 based on the plans of Kálmán Lux. The construction of the hotel during the economic crisis was one of the most spectacular examples of well-organized public works. The hotel became a popular meeting place for the Hungarian aristocracy and the art world and hosted many famous guests, including Attila József, who wrote his poem “Ode” here.
After World War II, the hotel became state-owned and operated as a resort. In the 1990s, the hotel underwent a complete renovation and regained its original splendor. Today, the Palace Hotel operates as a four-star superior hotel and remains one of the jewels of the Hungarian hotel industry.
The Present of the Palace Hotel
The Palace Hotel has preserved its original charm and elegance to this day. The hotel has 133 rooms, each uniquely furnished and comfortable. Hotel guests can enjoy a variety of services, including a wellness area, restaurant, bar, and conference rooms. The hotel is an excellent venue for weddings, conferences, and other events.
The Palace Hotel is not only open to hotel guests. The hotel’s café and terrace are accessible to the public, allowing everyone to admire the architectural beauty of the hotel and the stunning panorama of Lake Hámori.

Nature lovers can hike in the Bükk Mountains, boat on Lake Hámori, or explore the caves in the area.
