The transformation of the left wing

This is an old post. Information may be outdated.

In Hungary, based on the results of the EU elections, the support for traditional left-wing, socialist, and social democratic successor parties has collapsed.
The reasons are multifaceted: the traditional left-wing parties have been unable to become a viable alternative for over 12 years, and they failed to perceive the loss of mass support.
During their years in opposition, the parties neglected organizational renewal, experienced a decline in membership, and continued to fight for leadership within the opposition.
Amidst these internal struggles, they failed to define their ideologies and address the voter segments they should represent.

Economic transformations also led to changes in social stratification; today, there is no unified, large working class actively supporting left-wing parties in defense of their interests.
Significant portions of socialist and social democratic principles are now represented by right-wing and nationalist parties. Welfare state-related aspirations have reduced dissatisfaction among wage earners, while the truly impoverished segments lack self-organizing capacity.

Left-leaning politicians pursued liberal policies for years, losing support from the masses of wage-earning employees. Since the regime change in 1989, despite occasional economic challenges, the country has moved toward prosperity, and voters have been more responsive to centrist political slogans.
In recent years, crises (financial, COVID, armed conflicts) prompted some voters to react more favorably to right-wing political messages (sovereignty, defense, state intervention), further diminishing support for left-wing parties.
Following significant electoral defeats, not all party leaders took political responsibility, and some chose to explain away their failures. It appears that they will focus only on retaining their existing voter base.

Nationwide, left-wing parties in Hungary have low levels of support. However, at the local government level, they still hold positions as mayors and local representatives, even though several party politicians won positions again as independents in the municipal elections.
It appears that they will focus only on retaining their existing voter base and do not expect to win over new voters.
