Al Di Meola and Mike Stern Deliver a Thrilling Concert at Jazzfest Budapest

Budapest, November 11, 2024 – Two guitar legends, Al Di Meola and Mike Stern, delivered a breathtaking concert at the Erkel Theatre last night as part of Jazzfest Budapest. The double bill was a real treat for jazz-rock and fusion music lovers, as both artists brought their A-game to the stage.

The evening opened with the Al Di Meola Electric Band. The virtuoso guitarist, who rose to fame in the 70s as a member of Return to Forever, once again proved why he is considered one of the greatest figures in fusion music. He was joined by a band of exceptional musicians, including Elias Tona on bass, Carmelo Medina on guitar, Luis Alicea and Gisella Giurfa on drums, and Gumbi Ortiz on percussion.

Di Meola played with impressive technique, energy, and passion, captivating the audience. The setlist included some of his best-known songs alongside new compositions, featuring an exciting blend of jazz, Latin music, and rock elements. The audience rewarded the performance with enthusiastic applause, and Di Meola played an encore as a special treat.

The second half of the concert featured the Mike Stern Band. Stern, one of the most prominent guitarists in modern jazz and jazz-rock, who has collaborated with legends like Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, and Michael Brecker, was also in top form. His band included world-class musicians like Dennis Chambers on drums, Chris Minh Doky on bass, Bob Franceschini on saxophone, and German guitarist Leni Stern.

Stern’s music combines the elegance of jazz with the energy of rock, and his virtuoso guitar playing and unique sound immediately captivated the listeners. The synergy and improvisational skills of the band members were impressive, and the audience thoroughly enjoyed the electrifying atmosphere of the concert.

The performances of the two guitarists were a real musical feast for jazz enthusiasts. Both proved that they belong among the greatest in the genre, and that they have lost none of their energy and creativity over their decades-long careers.
